Discovering Netherton Foundry: Lightweight Spun Iron Cookware Handmade in England

At Peppercorn Cookware, we’re always excited to introduce pieces that combine traditional craftsmanship with everyday practicality. One of our newest favourites is the beautiful range of spun iron cookware and bakeware from Netherton Foundry.

This small, family-run company designs, sources, and handcrafts every item in South Shropshire, right in the heart of England. While cast iron is more familiar to many home cooks, spun iron offers a distinct advantage: it delivers very similar performance while being significantly lighter and much easier to handle.

Why Spun Iron Works So Well

Spun iron cookware from Netherton Foundry heats evenly across the base and sides, giving you consistent browning and excellent results whether you’re searing a steak or baking a golden loaf. Because the pieces are spun rather than cast, they weigh roughly half as much as a comparable cast iron pan, making them far more manoeuvrable in the kitchen.

We stock a wide selection at Peppercorn, including their versatile frying pans, woks, and the ever-popular Prospector Pan — a firm team favourite for everything from stovetop cooking to straight-to-table serving. Their bakeware range is equally impressive, helping us achieve beautifully risen breads, cakes, and roasts every time.

Once you start reaching for your Netherton Foundry pieces, you’ll quickly understand why they’ve become go-to cookware in our own kitchens — and we’re confident you’ll feel the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Netherton Foundry cookware made? Every piece is handmade in South Shropshire, England by the skilled team at Netherton Foundry.

Is the cookware pre-seasoned? Yes. Each item leaves the workshop pre-seasoned with organic, locally sourced flaxseed oil, giving it a natural non-stick finish so it’s ready to use straight out of the box.

For the best start, we recommend washing your new pan in hot water (no soap or detergent) and drying it immediately on a low heat on the hob or in a warm oven.

What exactly is spun iron? Spun iron offers the same great heat distribution and durability as traditional cast iron, but at about half the weight. The result is cookware that browns food beautifully and evenly while being noticeably lighter and easier to lift.

Can I use it on all types of hobs? Absolutely. Netherton Foundry pans work on gas, electric, halogen, ceramic, and induction hobs.

Important tip: Always start heating your pan slowly on a low setting, especially on powerful hobs like induction. Sudden high heat can cause the pan to buckle. Always match the hob ring size to the base of the pan.

Is it oven-safe? Yes, the spun iron itself is fully oven-safe. However, pans with wooden handles (such as the frying pan, wok, and crepe pan) should have the wooden handles removed before oven use.

Can I put it in the dishwasher? No. The iron can rust and wooden handles may be damaged. Hand washing is the only recommended method.

How do I clean my Netherton Foundry pan? After cooking, clean the pan with hot water and a stiff plastic brush — avoid soap or detergent for day-to-day cleaning. Never plunge a hot pan into cold water, as this can cause warping.

If food has stuck, pour over some boiling water to loosen it, then wipe dry immediately with a towel. Always dry the pan thoroughly and finish by placing it on a low heat on the hob or in a warm oven. Never let it air dry.

How do I re-season the pan? Over time, if food starts to stick, the surface looks dull or grey, or you notice any rust, it’s time to re-season.

  1. Wash the pan with hot soapy water and a stiff brush (soap is fine this time).
  2. Rinse and dry completely.
  3. Apply a very thin, even layer of vegetable oil inside and out.
  4. Place a sheet of foil on the bottom oven rack to catch drips.
  5. Put the pan upside down on the top rack and bake at 180–200°C for at least one hour.
  6. Turn the oven off and let the pan cool inside.

Store the pan uncovered in a dry place. Repeat the process if needed.

Special note for induction and powerful hobs Because each pan is handmade, bases may not be perfectly flat like a machine-made pan. To protect the pan and maintain your warranty:

  • Always heat slowly, starting on a low setting before increasing power.
  • Use a hob ring that matches the size of the pan base.

The warranty does not cover damage from fast heating on induction, dropping a hot pan into cold water, or using an incorrectly sized hob ring.
